Costa Rica Surfing

Though many people have fond memories of Costa Rica surfing, this area of the world is not well-known for large waves. Still, it draws many surfers from around the globe for another reason entirely...

While those surf spots that have large crashing waves may be fun for a few days at a time, Costa Rica surfing almost guarantees waves at all times. Thanks to the consistent high-head surf that this coastal line offers, those that venture out into the deep with a board in hand will find lots of waves around the clock. Another great reason to head to this area is the fact that all surf routes are clearly mapped out by season, size of surf, and location – this means that you won’t have to spend any time chasing the waves by car.

The Northern Pacific Coast is best explored from December to April when offshore winds produce great waves. During this time, Witches Rock, Playa Negra, and Playa Grande are all excellent options. From May to November, the Central and Southern Pacific Coasts are the best places to be, and the Caribbean Coast is sublime from May to November. If you plan your vacation time in accordance with this schedule, you should be able to find some decent waves no matter where you decide to go.

One of the best ways to explore any Costa Rica surfing spot is to select a town that you will use as your home base, and then rent a car to drive to any break around. For the most part, all breaks are located near most major towns, so you really won’t have to waste any time looking for some hidden beach. Speaking of hidden beaches... try not to go near those spots that do not include an abundance of surfers. Some spots may be “local only,” while others may actually present a lot of danger that can be largely unknown to tourists.

In short, stick with those breaks that have been previously tested, and only wander into local waters if you have been invited. No matter what the season may be, you can almost always find some great waves throughout this small country.

Costa Rica surfing opportunities are sure to please anyone that wants to try their luck at battling the waves. Whether you are young or old, new or experienced, this country is just the place to give those waves your best shot.
